Nia

Nia combines elements of martial arts, dance and mindfulness.
Nia is a holistic movement concept that addresses all aspects of your life – your body, your mind and your spirit. Every class creates awareness in your dance and you feel you have more energy, are mental clear and emotional in balance. Nia is non-impact, danced barefoot and can be adjusted to everyone’s abilities. The movements have three levels and can be adapted to your body’s needs – from beginner to athlete.

We believe that each of us can discover, explore and unleash our potential to live a healthy and fulfilling life by activating our senses and sharpen our body’s intelligence. Nia was created in 1983 by Debbie Rosas and Carlos AyaRosas with the vision that fitness could be seen, felt and experienced differently – less painful and more pleasurable.

This vision is the basis for The Nia Technique – a holistic form of exercise that integrates movements, concepts and philosophies from both Eastern and Western traditions. Nia’s Principle # 1 is Joy Of Movement

Nia is for you who want experience pleasure and joy while you exercise.

Yin and Yang

A Nia class contains a continous shift between yin and yang – the precise combined with the fluid, the powerful with the soft.
Using the 9 movement forms in Nia both our physical, mental and emotional body is moved.
Nia develops balance and presence in your body, stress is reduced and replaced with vitality, health and joy. Nia improves your physical and mental “wellbeing”

Music and repitition

The music plays a big role in Nia, we dance with sound and silence in the music.
The movements are consciously simple and repetitive.
When repeating moves our body experiences a joy of recognition.
Every Nia Class has a focus and intent, our cells are moved and our awareness sharpened.
Nia is training of your nervous system to music.

The movement forms in Nia:

  • Tai Chi
  • Tae Kwon Do
  • Aikido
  • Jazz Dance

  • Moderne Dance

Nia is my space where all expectations, standards and rigid structures are destroyed and replaced by freedom, joy and an intense presence. Here I find so much beauty, pleasure and excitement –  in the music, in the movements, in the space, in everyone’s eyes. Each Nia class is different, which means that even if I dance every day, it never gets boring. Camilla plays with the music, the steps and with us, so we are constantly challenged and surprised. Besides getting in really good shape and experience a degree of flexibility, I did not think possible, I have found a place where I can express who I am, let go and surrender.”
